Philipsburg: -- Immigration officers raided the Today Newspaper on Friday after they were tipped off by a disgruntled employee that the management of Today had at least two persons working illegally for the company.

SMN News learnt that a well-known local reporter has been having problems with the management of Today who suspended her.

It is further understood that the Today Management has decided to remove the person as a reporter and assigned her as their translator. This however, did not sit well with the reporter so she contacted immigration on more than one occasion informing them that the Today has hired two persons illegally. One of the reporters who was targeted is Sophia Jordan from Guyana.

SMN News further understands that the managing editor of the Today Hilbert Haar visited the immigration department on Thursday hoping to resolve the matter, but even though he was promised that the immigration would not visit the Newspaper’s office however, the contrary took place on Friday. SMN News also understands that Haar was invited to the Philipsburg Police Station on Friday where he was questioned about the illegal worker. It is said immigration officers told Haar he would be charged with human smuggling. In an invited comment, Prosecutor Rienk Mud said his office was aware of the situation. Mud said the case is under investigation and if it is proven that, the Today indeed hired an illegal they would be issued with a fine.

Since the story mentions the name of Sophia Jordan, it might as well have contained the name of the "well-known reporter" who ratted on her. That's Muriel Nijhove.
Nice to know that there are people on the island like Nijhove, a leech who would have done well as a collaborator with the Germans in he Second World War.
Disgusting.

You see whyn the Brooks Tower Accord is so important.
Hiring a worker is a case of human smuggling. Are we really seroius here on SXM ??
But these things have to happen to Haar, because he is a "nasty" man. Very bold and ouit of order. When he is writng he doesn't respect people.
This is good for him, he shouls be fired.

It is said that flies follow "tihs" Everytime some of that tihs comes up concerning the Today Newspaper, Haar is involved. I do not know what really happened but if ask myself if this man was dealt with properly the first, second, probably 4th time maybe this story would not have happened. Or maybe he is just a target of the media and police? ( that is meant to be sarcastically written)

'a leech who would have done well as a collaborator with the Germans in he Second World War. '

What a bunch of nonsense !

The Today newspaper is breaking the law by hiring illegals. What country in the world allows this kind of enormous amount of illegals to take over?

Muriel did the right thing !

No body of the today newspaper tip the police this website need to stop with these things. is very easy if you have a strange person coming in and going around Politicians and to official parties to work as journalist interviewing people an alert will automatic rise. If you going to police activities and you identify yourself as reporter and the police see it automatic an alert rise.

Mr. Alex need to stop what he is busy doing within the office trying to target the local heads that is the corner of the existing of the Today newspaper today. If someone has left the company and you claim you are the boss Mr. Alex do me a favor don’t come with a attitude that you are going to fire local people working in the Today, you just come St Maarten and you don’t know who build the today newspaper. If I was you I will stop targeting the local Dutch pa*sport holder reporter and photographer, do what you came here to do that is work and report. Because I really want the Lt. Governor/immigration to look into your status how come you working here on this island because you’re pretty young in age to have a work permit in your hands. Again going to married or live with an Antillean (black Caribbean person) you cannot be deported or I rather say a makamba..... ? smilies/shocked.gif smilies/shocked.gif
Yes your Makamba, back off the local reporter otherwise we will bust your move and conversation on the phone with your makamba dushi….

Any way this website need to stop putting people name and showing what direction she think info came out..... and really go and look for the right tip and info,... Orders came from an office in the Government building ...rarararar which one ....hahahah you can go and sit in the Island Council where the people who has to sign your papers is sitting correct? Well get your facts correct miss...!!!!!

Insider, Haar is Hitler. He is a human trafficker and abuser. Most of his employees are afraid to talk about his wrong doings because he uses his position in the department to hara*s and intimidate them. Good not all of them are intimidated by him. I would have turned in the illegals he employed too. People talk but they do not know what goes on in that office. Muriel, I back you 100%. Bring down all of Hitlers men and women. Insider must be one of his collaborators and felt the pinch when they picked up the illegal employee.

I hadn't planned to write anything about the issue, not sure if I will, too busy with other stuff more important and interesting to me.
I would like to point something out to you, because it seems you are clueless about SXM PE and blogging. Did you know that if you really had something of interest to say you could sign into the site yourself and write a blog? DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT A BLOG THERE, BY ME OR ANYONE ELSE, DOES NOT SPEAK FOR THE SITE ITSELF? Do the capitals help with understanding and finding enlightenment on how it works??

Your cluelessness seems applicable to marijuana, or to the fact that the blog you refer to invites a discussion. I guess your too lazy here spouting off dumb comments to participate?

sigh**** i was really hoping not to get dragged into this. but looking at the post from 'Protected Angel' and the manner in which it was writer i think i know who it is. that would be the self proclaimed reporter who believes she is the best thing to happen to the profession.
where are your qualifications???
anyhow in my defense i would gladly admit that i am 21 years old and yes i am the editor of the Today Newspaper. i have two university degrees both of which were obtained before i turned 18 years old.
and yes i do have work and residency permits. and yes again they are all legit.

i have no issues with any 'local' or 'dutch' pa*sport holders. the two individuals in question (they know themselves) have issues with themselves.
I am not from St. Maarten and to he honest i am happy with that. because i know how to work for what i want and how to deal with authority.

I dont abuse the system and not turn out for work for over a month then still have the balls to call and ask how much money is on my paycheque (as if one should even be there)

the people of this island never ceases to amaze me its like u just expect everything to be handed to you.
if most of you cared enough u would have educated yourself in the fields that u dont want foreigners to come and fill.

and fyi Muriel. i know exactly where who built the Today Newspaper (Guyanese) at least three of which are at the Daily Herald today one of whom is an Editor there.
Oh s**t, the Editor in Chief of the Herald is a Guyanese as well... (Couldn't ignore that).

whatever decisions i make or whatever actions i take i can stand by them. i did nothing to either you nor Leo. i asked u for my stories to complete my paper u got upset and stormed off cause apparently a foreigner shouldn't ask you for anything. Leo on the other hand stole from me and that would explain the discomfort between me and him. He likes to remind people that he "from here' and i take just as much pleasure in point out to him that I AM NOT. yet he has to report to ME and so do you whether u like it or not.

i have no apologies. i have worked hard to be where i am and i will not allow anyone who somehow believes that i dont deserve it to try and take it away from me.

oh btw Muriel. the Dominican promoters whom u stole US$35,000 from are looking for you. be sure to inform them that the deed u hold to the land in sucker garden isn't actually yours. wouldn't want anyone else to have to pay for your dishonesty.
hope the month stay at the hotel was worth it. after unearned luxury comes a long time of discomfort...

oh again your son in Holland says he is cold, hungry and has no place to sleep. get him before the gods take him...

See u in the office.
and u better have stories for me

peace!
C U later Sophia

I wrote this comment on Island Times but they cannot deal with reality so let me set some facts straight. The police and immigration has the right charge but for the wrong man. If they want to charge someone with HUMAN Trafficking they have to look at the future Mr. of Justice because here are some of the names of people he brought in. Several of them now working and contributing to SXM development at the Daily Herald while of them
is the biggest political whore.
For those that dont know.

ROBERT BAZIL ---(first Editor)

My apologies

A few of my colleagues have expressed their dissatisfaction in my ‘emotional’ response on this website to accusations levied against me, my countrymen and by extension foreigners in general, by a disgruntled employee of the Today Newspaper.
First I must offer my sincerest apologies to anyone whom I have offended in my evidently callous statements. A colleague of mine indicated that my statements could well have long-term effects on the comfort of my countrymen and more so to myself.
He also suggested that since I am so proud to be a foreigner, I should note that I am not forced to be here on St. Maarten.
Point noted. I am not forced to be here. I came here to develop myself as an individual and in my chosen profession, and I intend to do so regardless of the obstacles.

While I would not admit my reaction was uncalled for, I would however acknowledge that it was unethical coming from someone in my position and certainly belittling to the local man. I should not have generalized my statements as I did.
I have asked that Bibi remove the comment from the site and I hope she complies expeditiously with that request.

I accept that I too have stooped to an unacceptable level in my post and for that again I offer my apologies.
My statements would clearly give the impression that I have no regards for the contribution of the local man. That is certainly besides the case.
There are several locally bread individuals whom I too get inspiration from in my daily operations. Some of them I work with, some of them are just acquaintances.
One of these persons is my fiancé and the mother of my son Alex jr. who was the first to express her disappointment in my statements.

It seems I have allowed myself to do what I myself have always frowned upon, and that is engage in a war of words on the seemingly never-ending battle of local vs. foreigners.

Sophia Jordan was slighted.

Hilbert Haar is not the victim here.
Today newspaper is not the victim.
Muriel Nijhove, with an axe to grind against management, went after Sophia in a transparent attempt at hurting her former employer and boss. Obviously, there was only one casualty.

I say former, because we know, Muriel, you've done nothing at Today newspaper since you got there. After press conferences, you'd hara*s the Herald's reporters for information and then you'd slap together barely coherent sentences that took more work to edit than to actually "write." (*Seen that for myself*)
It's only a matter of time before you get booted for good.
I'm disgusted thinking that I once defended you to other reporters who laughed at the idiotic garbage that spills from your ill-painted lips.

I'm done being petty, though.
Sophie wouldn't want that, and I love that about her. See, she's a bigger person than you and your conspirators whomever they were/are.

Your time will come.

As for Sophia coming here, I'm glad she did.
Bert made a great point in his O & C piece Saturday: a newspaper really can't wait on bureaucracy to fill its editorial staff. That does not excuse skirting the law, but it does explain why it would be necessary.

Myself included, there are only three "local" (born here and in the Antilles) full-time journalists at the moment.

We need to import talent to fill our ranks. It's that simple. Reporting requires a lot of effort and honing, and it also means you start at the bottom and earn a niche - if at all. Very rarely do you just dive right in and become great, and training cannot be given by everyone.

Only a handful of us are here without formal training - again, myself included. And, even that being said and done, it took years and good teaching to get those first slivers of great work.

Sophia is not "unskilled labor."
She has a Bachelors in Communications and has excelled in Media Studies and Web Design. She's worked for a leading newspaper in Guyana.
Today wasn't giving her a chance to experience the job; she had that. They saw potential in a new, young talent and hoped to strengthen that talent for the betterment of themselves and, I would think, the island.

I have my own reasons for missing Sophia.
I'm not shy about saying I'm in love with her and that she is an amazing person. Words can hardly describe how great a person she is, and how sincere and honest.
But then again you'd have to actual meet her and talk with her.
Most people will just never be lucky enough to know, I guess.
I know I've lost and so has Today.

On a larger scale, though, we've all lost in that whenever talent is forced away, whenever skills are taken for granted in favor of absent-minded allegiances, the community erodes.
How? Because, in this case, the young woman who thought about press freedom, who believed in writing truth and in ensuring the innocent get justice was the undeserving victim.

Oh, and she was working on getting her papers in order.

She was targeted because of someone else's grudge about something that she had not even known about. Were there no misguided vendettas, then this wouldn't even have come up; I'm certain we would not be talking about this.

Ask anyone who knows; they will tell you.

Sophie tries her best everyday.
She wants to be at her best everyday.
She approaches her job with zeal and an unfettered pa*sion.
She inspires people - again, me included.

If that's not a contribution to society, I don't know what is.
If that's not that the type of person we need making St. Maarten an even better place to be, then what is the type?

- Just think about that, and while you're at it, find Today newspaper's Tuesday, Sept. 1, edition to read her thoughts on press freedom. It's on page 5 with her picture.
Read and think about whether our society is transparent enough and why it is we need to do something about it. -

But as she always says, "Everything happens for a reason."

Miss you, Sophie.

how has this reached to this? it started with a disgruntled employee who by the looks of thigs, is certainly getting what she wants.

power be to her and power be to all of you that are naive enough to believe that she, at any point, had the best interest of the law or the island at heart when she started this.

and for Justice -if it is that u believe that Alex's qualifications do not exist i implore you to look deeper, not just at a few pieces of paper that says he is qualified, but at his work that should certainly mean more.

Mr. Holder,

As editor of the Today Newspaper, thanks for letting us know what your true thoughts are.
Your apology is nothing other than a ploy to keep your job.

What you wrote hurt the Today newspaper.

Oh and many persons built sxm, but you are not one of them. And just how sxm benefited from the contribution of foreigners, foreigners benefitted as well.

They were able to support families at home and they also were able to develop themselves and raise their standards of living in most cases..

The small group of ungrateful guyanese that you fall in are the ones who make the hardworking respectful ones look bad. So when you and your friends keep writing under different names to support your case, just remember that you turned this into a anti local issue. It was an immigration issues. Not because the today does not agree with a law they have the right to disregard it. The today had the young lady name in their paper under staff and featured her name on articles she writes. Noone is above the law.

Now we know that the editor at the Today cannot be ethical and professional. Based on what he wrote about his colleagues and he is a member of management.

its funny how things look depending on where you sit. reading this long a** list of comments says nothing more than the views of the people on this island differ intensely.

blaming Mr. Holder for his opinion on the interpreted local man's perception of an honest day's work is ridiculous. we all know that the opportunities available to the holders of Dutch Pa*sports are miles ahead of those without it. we all know it and we all use it to our benefit.

Sandra said Alex somehow should not have talked to or about his colleague the way he did. now why didn't she address the colleague who in an earlier post made the statements she did.

what is so ungrateful about Guyanese people or any foreigner for that matter? as anyone would see the ungrateful people are the ones like U Sandra.
your views are not far from those of Leopold James. but at lease he has the balls to admit that he doesn't really care much for foreigners and he attacks the issue from the top.

i my self am married to a foreigner and yes i think i understand first hand the matter at hand here.
someone came here to work and judging from what i hear from my non native friends and colleagues, getting a permit is not the easiest thing in the world.
i have even heard of instances where our own Antillean get teh boot in other countries like the US and Europe for the s**t we do because we are so spoiled on our own soil. we believe that the way we live here we can live everywhere else.

now the editor said what was on his mind. he admitted it was out of anger and sheer emotions.
whether u choose to hold on to the statements that were, in my interpretation, directed to the Surinamese woman who started this whole mess, then thats a problem for u...

we all need to stop thinking the way we do...
this is not about locals vs. foreigners

until one day a bunch of our children decides when they leave school that they wanna go into construction and work as laborers earning less than minimum wage, or are willing to walk for hours in the sun with a yellow t-shirt cleaning the sides of the streets, of clean up after the guests in the hotels, then and only then can we say good bye entirely to foreign labor.

we need to stop walking around with that "I from here' attitude and grow up and smell the coffee.

Mr. Holder's job should not be in jeopardy because he spoke his mind. if that is grounds for dismissal then i suggest all foreigners pick up and leave behind him. then we will see who really runs St. Maarten.

so lets just leave it be and end this bloddy discussion where it stands.

I from here and i dont give a sh** how many toes i just stepped on. wah ya gonna do take away my pa*sport???

I do not know anthing about what qualifications this young man has or has not....... that is not the issue for me.

I just think he is disrespectful and I do not buy his apology. He turned an immigration issue into a rant about locals. If he has a bone to pick, pick it with those he upset with.

He should be thankful for the opportunity to hone his craft on this island and acknowledge what this island has done for him as well. He was a small fish in a big pond now he is trying to be a big fish in this small pond.

I am not stupid to believe the hype because I know what goes on, but I wont be disrespectful to him either.

So I understand him trying to cover his a... now that he spilled his real thoughts. And he is entitled to them, but he wrote as editor of the paper and his arrogance came through.

I have read all these comments and I am sick to my stomach to see the level of discussions this topic has brought on. Since when foreigners dont have a right to their opinion. It seems as if Alex touch on some corns when he spoke out and defended himself in the character a*sa*sination.
People need to realize that Muriel I am sure knows 1000 more illegals but she does not have St. Maarten at heart when she reported this young woman who was doing what she is not capable of doing.
Speaking of local or Antillean journalist I want to remind Duane that there are a number of local journalists from St. Maarten, all of them with a degree or two. I am sure it's an oversight Duane because these journalist have refused to practice journalism they sit at GIS and do nothing. Sloppy work, blame each other and each of them have huge benefits from the island government and of course enough time to conduct their side businesses.
Who would want to work for the Herald? They filed bankruptcy three times. Granger went back there because the NA/Heyliger did not approve him to work for GIS.
As for Gibson people want a decent salary and are no longer slaves.

I rest my case and hope Bloieman bring the Human Smuggling Charges against the right man.

u done??? it should be radio news casts (plural) or to narrow it down THE radio news cast (singular) which i am sure u didn't mean, Born St. Maartener.

$ and dollar means the same thing.
i know dutch is really the language of instruction but i also know English is a must. so tell your teachers to teach you about subject verb agreement, nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and whatnot -these are things we (foreigners) learn in primary school but its ok for u to catch up on it now anyway.

Mr. Alex Holder aka Professor Ed.

I will let you know that I was correct in stating that your apology was a farce. I am not a local but I am married to one very educated one, who obviously knows more about IT than you do.

So let me break it down to you, and I will try to be respectful and hopefully you will actually learn something. You seem to have been jerked up instead of raised, so I will break it down like I am speaking to a 1 year old.

Please note that your ISP is registered when you write a post. There have been many comments from the Today newspaper today, all using different names.

I am proud to use my real name. So your first rant was under the ISP 72.252.0.52. Your apology was under 72.252.9.55 and your latest rant against locals and my person are under 72.252.9.55. Amazingly, the same one as your so-called apology.

So Mr. Holder, whereever you got your two degrees from at the tender age of 18, they obviously did not teach you about common sense. Please use a different computer and not simply a different terminal at your office... it registers.

So you are a hypocrite young man and a opportunist. And your hatred of locals is soo deep and I was informed that you got here last year and was illegally working until your papers came through.

Thank God for St. Maarten. You became an editor, you got a car, and you were able to get a dutch pa*sport holder to support you and give you status.

God Bless you Mr. Holder also known as Professor Ed. You are not as smart as you think you are.

So I will go and read a book and you the dog, will certainly lie. My husband did not want me to repsond, but someone needs to out you for the dumb hypocrite that you are. I hope Mr. Gipson follows these blogs, but if he does not.... I will definitely visit him as I have saved all of the rants.

You do not deserve the position you have.

God Bless you because you need it.

Mr. Holder also known as Professor Ed.

Those 2 degrees that you hold obviously did not teach you much about IT. Let me break it down to you so you can understand what you obviously was not taught.

You wrote your original rant and the ISP showed up as 72.252.9.52. Your apology was under 72.252.9.55.
Your latest degrading remarks about locals as Professor Ed is under 72.252.9.55

You obviously do not have the common sense to know that if you want to write under different names to get your agenda across or clear your name, you should actually leave the Today newspaper as it registers.

Oh and by the way, I have read your work so you can take some extra journalism courses as well. Although I must say your writing have improved a bit since you got here.

So instead of writing under different names, be a man and stand by what you wrote in your rant against locals because that is what you truly believe based on your writings as professor Ed etc.

You are so simple my dear. I hope your house is in order as you will get the attention you seem to crave.

I think I should drop off a IT book at the Today for you so you can read up a bit about ISPs etc. My husband pointed it out to me, another educated local.

Go back to Guyana Mr. Holder. You make the guyanese look worse than they actually are. You see, you have been outed you sick SOB and you will be taken care of. In the meantime, stop writing under different names...be a man and not a mouse.

Oh and they taught me that in elementary school as well even though the language of instruction was Dutch. Whereever you obviously bought your degrees, you should ask for a refund.

I think I will take my evidence to Mr. Gipson for his perusal so he can see what his Editor does on his buck.

Oh I am sorry, my wife told me that she already sent you that message but the site administrator did not post it.

So go back to work, young man, as you got a paper to deliver.

You are not as smart as you think you are. So I suggest you ask for a refund for those 2 degrees that you bought. In the meantime, I will continue reading and you continue hiding behind your words.

You turned an immigration issue that you caused into a anti-local issue.

But it gave you an opportunity to say what I just found out you have been saying around your office. You see, I did not get emotional like my wife, I asked a few questions about you.

You are entitled to your opinion young man... but be a man and not a mouse. I asked my wife to ignore you and your many aliases because you cannot change small-minded people.

Oh and Mr. Holder,

I suggest the way to cover yourself, is to write something against yourself and/or your alias Professor Ed, using the same computer so that the IP address will register and people will think that Professor Ed is not you.

Just giving you some friendly unpaid advice since you obviously need it.

Because you come across as very desperate and if what I found out about you today is indeed correct, you already went through soo much to stay on this island. After all, you are a whiz at smokescreens considering what you have been able to pull off in the year you have been here. So I do not want to affect your income because that is all you really care about.

So during your many breaks at the today, continue writing anti-holder comments. This is another smokescreen that you need to erect.

This is a reaction to the earlier post of I FROM HERE.

Now please note that the IP is the same one that Mr. HOlder apology appeared under, which is the Today.

Mr HOlder, stop writing under different aliases selling your case. First you write as a foreigner, then you write as a local, you are very creative but not very smart.

THE IP REGISTERS.

But please note because people do not like what you wrote does not make them anti-foreigner. All foreigners are not arrogant sick puppies like you are. But I understand that you worried about your job......and you should be.

Not to defend Alex, but why is it OK for St. Maarteners to say they are proud St. Maarteners but when he says he is a proud foreigner it is all of a sudden a problem. You even have Leopold James who says he is a "proud native indigenous St. Maartener without apologies." and no one has a problem with that, but when Mr. Holder says something about being a proud foreigner everyone gets offended.

I think Mr. HOlder should be a proud guyanese. If he was not, then something is wrong with him. So that is not the issue at hand. You can be proud without feeling the need to degrade others.

He turned this into a anti-local issue. Just look at what he has been writing.

So I think he needs to be proud of who he is and where he came from. But the lengths that he goes to to degrade st. maarten people shows that he has issues.

Just how Mr. James speaks for himself and not all St. Maarteners, Mr. HOlder speaks for himself and not all guyanese.

But Mr. HOlder has to be exposed and that will happen.
