laveist-commishPhilipsburg- Commissioner of Labour & Social Affairs Louie Laveist, recently met with Antillean Minister of Labour Affairs Elvis Tjin-A-Tjoe assistant Humphrey Alejandra in Curacao where number of labour related issues were discussed.

Laveist was informed that an extra-ordinary Labour Mediator was appointed to deal with labour issues on the island of Statia. The search is also still on for a Labour Mediator for St. Maarten. Safety on the job was discussed at length and certain requirements have to be in place for Country St. Maarten based on International Labour Organization standards that must be adhered too.

"I was also informed about a number of steps that need to be taken with respect to the decentralization of the Federal Government Labour Department as well as the labour market policy plan.

"I will be formulating a new approach in order to facilitate the speedy decentralization of the aforementioned department. The tripartite committee will have to be involved with certain things.

"The labour market policy plan is very important for the workers. It deals with safety on the job, abuse, and the six-month contracts which are all very important issues and have my attention. I will be working on these in order to get things moving forward," Commissioner of Labour & Social Affairs Louie Laveist said.
