PHILIPSBURG:--- The Scotia Bank ‘Bright Future’ and Rotary-Rotract Spelling Bee 2015 is set to begin on Sunday, October 18, 2015. The semi-finals are to follow on October 25 and the finals on November 1.
The event will be held at the Belair Community Center, with food and drinks available during the breaks.
‘This year we’ve decided to hold the event on a Sunday in order to accommodate all primary schools,’ Rotarian Wayne Wilkie stated. In the past, the Seven Day Adventist School was unable to participate due to the event being held on a Saturday.
Similar to past years, schools participating will benefit from the proceeds of the Spelling Bee by being able to submit a ‘wish list’ for items needed by their school. All participating schools receive items from their wish list ranging from water coolers, to computers or even fridges and stoves to assist with their breakfast programs. Individual winners and the winning school receive additional prizes.
‘This year we look forward to seeing the children excel with the words and also with their sportsmanship, as we’ve seen in the past years,” Wilkie said.
Currently there are 14 schools signed up to participate in the spelling bee, including two from Anguilla.
Scotiabank is the main sponsor of the event. Rotary Club of St. Maarten-Mid Isle and Rotaract Sunrise have the task of organizers.
Both clubs encourage the general public to come out and support these schools on October 18, 25 and November 1. There will be a prize for the school with the most supporters, so come on out to support the students. You will be amazed by the level of performance of our children.
