frans05052009Philipsburg: --- Even though not willing to share his thoughts on the verdict of Louie Laveist senator and Island Council man Frans Richardson said that politics on St. Maarten has hit rock bottom. Richardson said the case of Laveist is still ongoing since the embattled commissioner has appealed the verdict handed down last week.

Asked about the political status on St. Maarten Richardson said right now St. Maarten is in a difficult position and it does not seem as if the island can get its foot on the issues affecting the people. He said right now politicians are occupied with the issues affecting politics instead of those affecting the population. This is to show that politics on St. Maarten has hit rock bottom.

Asked if he thinks a referendum should be held locally Richardson said when St. Maarten held its referendum in 2000 they did not make provisions for the people to go back to the polls. He said politicians on St. Maarten made other options which are not the same as in Curacao. However, the councilman said if the people of St. Maarten feels that are what has to be done they need to speak up and say what it they want is.
He said politicians would have to respect the wishes of the people but they need to make their voices heard and not remain laidback. Richardson said he felt that is one of the main hindrances on St. Maarten even though not knowing the real reasons why the people are so quiet. He said he does not know if it is because there are over 100 nationalities on the island each of who have their own opinion.

Asked if he is in favor of separate status or independence. Richardson said that he does not believe people should not mix up these issues. He said whether or not there is country status or independence the judicial system would always be in place and has to be respected. The island council man said he does not believe people should use the verdicts of Laveist or anyone else to determine what type of status is needed. "Independence is basically a state of mind, something that people want on to be on their own. If the courts need to deal with certain people let it be and not mix the issues." Richardson explained that people need to respect the separation of powers.
Asked if St. Maarten is financially ready to go independent Richardson said he would like to know which country is really ready. He gave an example of the United States that is now in trillions of dollars in debt and facing recession yet they are making it. He felt it is the leaders are the ones who have to make sure the interest of people are defended.

Yea Frans. And you didn't help bring it down with your talk of switching sides? So who's playing the political games? Hypocrite!

And somebody close to Frans tell him to watch his health. He is not looking well at all. Start with losing weight. I'm serious.

Now that even a politician, businessman and Island-council member who is also parliamentarian public admits that St. Maarten has 'hit rock bottom' , means that he in fact has given a motion of non-confidence in the Government of St. Maarten.
Consequently, he has now finally tapped into a growing sentiment within our community, that the current local politicians are untrustworthy and incapable of restoring trust and guaranteeing proper Governance on this island.
The statement of the Councilman, can certainly be interpreted that the people should now call the Dutch to intervene.
Meanwhile, for all intent and purposes, it is evident that at this moment St. Maarten is de-facto ungoverned if not ungovernable.
This is a situation that can not be allowed to continue.
Therefore It seems no longer a matter of IF, but definitely of WHEN it will be dealt with accordingly by the relevant authorities.
Tick, tack, tick tack.......

In my humble and honest opinon I will like to mention that before even considering thinking about what status a country should or must adopt, attain or entertain people should be more concern about the quality of representation they are getting from their representatives,OK.
Fact #1. quality representation should become a fact before even talking about the status the people should opt for and this makes all the sense in the world,OK.
Fact #2. obtaining a status does not automatically guarantee that our "good Samaritans" in government will ever be convinced, then make confession and then be converted from being hooligans to become heroes after we obtain a new status,OK.
Fact # 3. conclusion we should then for all safety sake use the practical and sensible approach of First things First,OK.
In other words lets get our acts together by purging and purifying the entire administration off our corporate crooks in government who are busy looking after themselves rather than taking care of the people's business.
Fact #4. you can never fight corruption with corruption that is unheard of,OK.
So why should we continue entrusting this awful administration who has no intention in ridding itself from the corruptive practises with the task in taking us to
"country St.Maarten"?????
Fact #5. this is like the story of the fox who says that he is fastening but the wise farmer still counts his chicken,OK.
Fact #6. our corruptive commissioners have benefitted from their quick fix get rich schemes, scams and shams in being able to accumulate awesome personal wealth and no one believes that these weasels will ever do the right things.
Fact #7. our weasels are then telling us by not wanting and willing to change their corrupt custom, culture and cult : what you see is what you get. Team DP!!!!

Do we always have to get personal? The issue at hand is the shameful situation we are faced with one after the other with corruption. The next thing that comes to mind, are there more who are going to march in front of the Judge? We get what we deserve because we are easily bought out. We do not see wrong for what it is but just an extension of right.

This whole charade is totally disgraceful.
It proves once more, that when a country has politicians with a corrupt mind, no laws, no rules can prevent that mentality from expressing itself sooner than later.
Remember a 'monkey is a monkey and will remain a monkey', even if it 'dresses up' otherwise.
Case in point.
Instead of doing the honorable thing and step down while his case is in appeal, Mr. LAVEIST tries to proclaim his innocence, makes himself a kingmaker of sorts, and finds all kinds of loopholes in the law to get away from accepting the consequences from his action, like a man.
No, his ego is more important than the fact that in the meantime he completely holds the island hostage.
This situation of crisis, can continue for months and even years, if he goes all the way the the highest court in the WORLD.
In the light of constitutional talks with the Netherlands, it shows the Dutch that no amount of checks and balances in any new status can change that mentality, it in genetically programmed.
Going into a new status with politicians with this immoral mindset, is nothing else than to put the country in the ranks of countries like Zimbabwe 'Mugaba-land', where the leader prefers sacrificing and starving out his own people than stepping down to give some-else a chance.
St. Maarten seems indeed ungoverned and perhaps ungovernable under these circumstances.
I pity the young people who have to witnes this charade and possibly live in such a Banana republic, created by our generation.
Imagine we get our 'own' people in the Justice system in 'Country St. Maarten' with this 'Banana-like' mentality.
A social 'tsunami' is awaiting the 'Friendly island' in the event we are blessed with the 'Country status'.
For the record, I maintain, that unless we grow up as a proud people with a conscience and respect for the law, we will not be ready in a million years ni for 'country status', ni for 'political independence'.
First things first....a metal revolution for the better, including mental independence.
have a great day.

I think it is really sad to read some of the comments on this pannel. It makes me feel as if either some people read articles and cannot comprehend what they read or they just type whatever comes to mind.
In this article, Senator Richardson is clarifying his position, his views on separate status and his concerns about the future of this island and its people, and all some of these people can find to do is talk about ''nonsense'', no wonder we are having a difficult time evolving and uniting as a people on this island. You should be worrying about your future and your children's future if you intend to live on this island You should be concern about the kind of representation you have in government, since I am sure that neither of those who made negative and personal statement about Mr Richardson would ever postulate themselve to represent us in government. It is always good and easy to sit back from a distance and critisize how things is being handled and done in govenment, but instead of critisizing our representatives, you should use your strenght and mouth power to give positive ideas and solutions to the problems that this island is facing, you should try to contribute your part as a citizen of this island.
After reading this article, I understand that Mr Richardson wants people to be outspoken and let government know what they want for ST MAARTEN. Do you still want separate status? and he doesn't want your decision to be based on what is happening now with the former Commissioner Laveist. He doesn't want people to think that if St Maarten gets Separate status, there will be no justice for high ranking politicians and that ST MAARTEN will be a lawless land like Somalia. He explains that the justice system will remain.
Some people need to put aside their personal feeling towards some of our representatives and give JACK his JACKET when needed.

Thank you.

SMN NEWS, I would like to congratulate you, you are doing a good job.
