ritabournegumbs12082015Parents should take back their children, while people should continue praying.

PHILIPSBURG:--- Minister of Education, Youths, Sports and Culture Rita Bourne Gumbs expressed her profound sadness with the loss of officer Gamali Benjamin. She said that what struck St. Maarten last week is the first in the country’s history. However, as Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture it is her duty to seek out ways to address the current issues affecting youths. She said as a former educator she was confronted with some uncomfortable situations. Her Ministry she said is working on a strategic plan one of which is to curb crime and to allow youths to be more involved in society.
However, she called on parents to take back their children while she felt that the people of St. Maarten need to start back praying like they did in the past. She said last week when the tragic incident occurred the people began praying again and for her that feelings were good but then the praying stopped.
As for parents she called on them to take back their children as no one can take on their responsibility to raise their children for them. “It begin with you, do not expect anyone to take your place, our job is to provide the tools for your children to be better, do not allow the television and the internet and other things to raise your children.” She also called on the community to look out for each child, she said in the past that could not happen. No child she said could be left alongside the road and today I calling on the community to come together.
She said the department of labor started a program “start here” while the youth desk has several programs for youths. Minister Bourne Gumbs said that no one should discriminate and decide who is from St. Maarten and who is not from St. Maarten the fact is all of us are here and we should deal with the issues affecting the country together.
