Consumer prices Sint Maarten February 2015 Prices have increased compared to December 2014

The Consumer Price Index for Sint Maarten has increased in the month of February 2015 by 0.8 percent compared to that of December 2014.

When comparing average consumer prices over a twelve month period (Feb. 2014 to Feb. 2015), an increase of 1.8 percent was recorded compared to the same period one year earlier.

This is evident from the data released by the Department of Statistics (STAT) today.

Price changes between December 2014 & February 2015.

The Consumer Price Index for Sint Maarten has increased in the month of February 2015 by 0.8 percent compared to December 2014. The price index recorded in February 2015
is 127.6.

Expenditure Categories – overall notable increases

In February 2015, five of the nine expenditure categories became more expensive, whilst two became cheaper and two remained unchanged. Amongst the more expensive were the categories; 'Food' (+1.0%), 'Household Furnishing & Appliances' (+0.8%), 'Medical Care' (+1.5%), 'Transport & Communication' (+4.7%) and 'Miscellaneous' (+0.4%); whereas slight decreases were recorded in 'Clothing and Footwear' (-0.9%) and
'Housing' (-0.3%); the expenditure category 'Beverages and Tobacco' and 'Recreation & Education' remained unchanged.

Within the expenditure category Food, it can be noted that eight of the nine food groups became more expensive whilst one remained unchanged. The following food groups recorded increases; Grain (+0.2%), Meat and Fish (+2.5%), Fats & Oils (+0.3%), Dairy Products (+0.4%), Potatoes, Vegetables & Fruit (+0.3%), Sugar & Chocolate (+0.1%), Eating-out (+1.7%) and other food resources (+0.9%). Whilst the food group Pre-cooked dishes remained unchanged.

More specifically the following products largely influenced the total price change within the food groups: 'Meat & Fish', was largely influenced by beef (-2.4%), oxtail (3.6%), other beef meat (+18.6%), Spareribs (+15.3%), other pork meat (9.2%), goat meat(-6.1%), Ham (-2.1%), chicken (+5.9%), other poultry (+7.2%), other pre-cooked dishes(-3.5%) and other fish (2.4%). The food group 'Dairy Products' was largely influenced by; cheese (-3.2%) and eggs (+9.6%). The food group 'Potatoes, Vegetables & Fruit' was largely influenced by; fresh potatoes (-3.3%), carrots (+3.7%), onions (-4.4%), bell peppers (-
7.9%), other vegetables (2.3%), spices (-3.7%), other fresh vegetables. (+47.2%), apples and pears (+5.2%), grapes and prunes, etc. (+4.3%), other citrus fruit (+11%), plantains
(-6.4%) and other fresh fruit (-3.2%).

Within the expenditure category Housing, it is noted that three of the five product groups became more expensive whilst one remained stable and two became cheaper. The product groups; 'Dwelling costs', 'Maintenance of dwelling' and 'Garden maintenance' increased by 0.4%, 1.1% and 0.3%, respectively, whilst 'Energy expenses' decreased by
3.9%. A decrease in the consumer price of electricity by 4.8% largely influenced the total
price change within the product group 'Energy expenses'. The product group
'Maintenance of dwelling' was largely influenced by a significant increase in the consumer price of cement by 12.6%
