PHILIPSBURG:--- Voice of the Youth St. Maarten is currently registering youngsters to be part of the St. Maarten Youth Brigade programme, which is geared towards transforming the lives of participants.
The programme focuses on getting at risk youths back on track as well as strengthening and bolstering the skills of regular youngsters and equipping all participants with useful life and leadership skills, hence anyone can apply to join the programme.
Registration will remain open until the end of this month. Parents interested in registering their children ages 15 to 21, can visit the St. Maarten Youth Brigade Office at Walter Nisbeth Road (Pondfill) # 93 above Island Finance between the hours of 8:30pm to 5:00pm.
A valid identification of the applicant (child) is needed for registration. The registration will be followed by a thorough screening, which will include an intake interview, a general knowledge test, sports test and medical evaluation performed by an in-house doctor.
There is no fee to register a child. Voice of the Youth is hoping to register between 20 to 25 youngsters for the programme by the registration deadline.
The Maarten Youth Brigade, a Voice of the Youth Foundation, was established to help guide youngsters from veering off the wrong path given the current lack of facilities to address their challenges. A positive change is already been seen in the first set of youngsters, who joined the Brigade last year.
Registration began in December, 2014. This is the last round of registration for the programme for this academic year. Space is limited so persons are urged to register early. The Brigade offers a comprehensive programme geared towards helping its young members in their overall development through a three year programme.
Youngsters in the Brigade are exposed to a range of physical, mental, cognitive and social education activities, in order to their promote self-confidence, self-esteem and higher level thinking skills. The programmes includes first aid courses, fire fighting workshops, mentorship sessions and general educational topics such as basic legal knowledge, public speaking, team-building, leadership and stress management.
The three-year programme is broken down into several parts. New members will participate in a three-month programme as aspirant cadet. Those who successfully complete this phase will become official members of the St. Maarten Youth Brigade and serve as Cadets. The first year will focus on educating members by exposing them to various training sessions to enhance their physical condition and forge self-discipline.
After the first year, members will move on to become brigadiers capable of translating theory into practice. They will participate in public events; work in sub-groups and should be able to signal and report dangerous situations.
After the second year, members will move on to become First Class brigadiers. As brigadiers they are expected to be self-reliant and handle tasks assigned with more responsibility. They will guide small groups under the supervision of their leaders.
Physical and mental training in the programme will range from kayaking and rappelling (descending from a near vertical surface with the help of a rope) to bivouac and survival training camps.
Members of the Youth Brigade will also receive training as first responders to be able to provide first aid assistance.
Assisting the Brigade are members of the Voluntary Corps St. Maarten VKS, who provide physical and mental training; St. Maarten Red Cross WIEMS, who will provide first aid training; Police Force, who will allow the Brigade to assist them in public events such as youth carnival and walkathons; St Maarten Fire Department, which will offer guided tours and provide basic information on their services and the St. Maarten Sea Rescue Foundation, which offers safety and rescue training.
In return Brigadiers will give the St. Maarten Sea Rescue Foundation a helping hand during events and assist the other partners where needed.
Following completion of the entire programme, members of the Brigade will be expected to function as leaders. They will be able to enrol and attend additional courses to show their leadership skills.
They will be equipped with the necessary physical and mental skills that would enable them to sign up to eventually become members of institutions such as the Police Force, Fire Department, Coast Guard, St Maarten Sea Rescue Foundation and organisations in the private sector, Peterson said at the launch.
St. Maarten Youth Brigade is funded by the Dutch Cooperating Funds and St. Maarten Development Funds.
