PHILIPSBURG:--- The St. Maarten Lions Club has just wrapped up a successful week of information sessions on the effects of youth alcohol use on the brain. The sessions were part of the Club's signature project for this Lionistic Year, the "Youth Alcohol Abuse Awareness Campaign".
During the week of December 8th to 12th 2014 high schools were treated to a very honest and open discussion with Rayle Roberts. Having over 12 years of experience in Psychotherapy, on and beyond Grand Cayman, Rayle Roberts, Psycho-Therapist & Owner of Rayle Roberts & Associates, received his Masters Degree in Clinical Social Work & Counseling, with a minor in Gerontology from the University of Central Florida. He hails from Grand Cayman where he is also the President of the Grand Cayman Lions Club and has a professional expertise in working with Young Substance Abusers.
The information sessions were held at 8 different high schools on the island. The core of the message was to consider to not drink alcohol until the young brain is completely developed (at age 25). Youngsters in the sessions were honest in admitting that they drink alcohol and were not aware of the effect of brain cell loss at their young age. In addition to the school sessions, a public presentation, geared towards parents, educators, and other stakeholders, was held at the Belair Community Center and aired live on SXM Cable TV on the evening of December 10th 2014.
The St. Maarten Lions Club would like to thank all participating schools for their pledge of support to this significant project, and all students for their pledge to pass on the message, and have conversations about the information that was relayed to them at their session.
