PHILIPSBURG:--- The National Alliance (NA) remains committed to the construction of a Cricket Stadium and a Center for the Performing Arts for the continued development of the youth in sports and in the arts.

Leader of the National Alliance Member of Parliament William Marlin said talks were in an advanced stage for the securing of land for the cricket stadium to be located at an alternative location in 2013 while the NA had been in the executive branch of government for a year.

Marlin said the construction of the Center for the Performing Arts, the brainchild of NA number three candidate and former Minister of Education Silveria Jacobs, will also be pursued and realised in the next governing period with NA at the helm of government. He said talks were also in advanced stages for land for the construction of a Center for the Performing Arts. Such a center is important for the country and its young people to move forward in the area of the arts.

NA also plans to pick up discussions once back in office for the construction of a high school in the country in the same vicinity. Additionally, NA envisions having a cricket field (at a separate location) near the Little League Stadium including the softball and football field.

"As soon as the new government takes office discussions and negotiations will continue for these very beneficial projects to be realised for the youth of this country," Marlin said in a press release on Tuesday. "These projects will also be done in a very responsible way."

He stressed that the plots of land that NA ministers had been negotiating for the Center for Performing Arts, Cricket Stadium and new school, were for almost four times less than the cost of what UP's VROMI Minister Maurice Lake has burdened the people of St. Maarten with in his secret Vorst Estate land deal.

In addition to the low cost of the land for these projects, the NA-led government had negotiated for 33,200 square metres of land to be donated to government for facilities such as parking. Some 42,500 square meters of land was slated for the cricket stadium and 6,930squarew metres for the Center for the Performing Arts.

The leader of the NA said sports is key to the well rounded development of young people in St. Maarten and cricket is among the leading sports in the region and is also a very popular one enjoyed by many in St. Maarten. Having a world class cricket stadium not only augurs well for the country's youth, but is also a key element for the diversification of the country's tourism industry and development of sports tourism in St. Maarten.

As for a Performing Arts Center, Marlin says the center can further fuel the countless budding talent that the country's young people possess.

"A National Alliance government will see these projects through completion in an effective, responsible and low cost way for the people of this country."
