PHILIPSBURG:--- The Board of St. Maarten ASCD will be holding its 24th Annual Conference from August 5th –6th, 2014 for all elementary and high school educators under the theme "Embracing the Best Practices - Reducing Unwanted Behavior in Schools".
All elementary school teachers are being encouraged to attend the conference on August 5, while the following day is reserved for secondary school teachers and all other stakeholders in education.
The venue for the two-day conference is the University of St. Martin from 7:30a.m. to 1:00p.m. The keynote speaker will be Mr. Ronald Greene from New York. Participants will have the opportunity to attend a series of workshops during those days that will further equip them in social skill instruction strategies on how to cope with children with behavioral problems in the classroom.
St. Maarten ASCD has over the years been committed to enhancing the quality of education for the island by offering training in the form of workshops, whether separate or as part of its annual conferences.
Some principles that will be addressed include:
- A greater focus on social development. Workshops will be given in this area and also social skill instruction.
- Special attention on behaviour modification: strategies on how to cope with children with behavioral problems within the classroom.
- Attention will focus on creating a learning process in which skills for written and oral language and mathematics are developed. Teachers will learn more about differentiating instruction so that the individual learning needs of the students are met.
- Child-centered approach based on a developmental approach to the learner. Workshops will be held on management of small group instruction so that instruction can be directed at the individual needs of the learner and therefore more child-centered.
