No Policy in Place on Long Lease Land since 2010.
SMN News reporter asked the Prime Minister to outline the policy or ordinance on the distribution of government long lease land, since SMN News saw on Island Real Estate website that they are selling government lease land for Monte Vista.
Monte Vista was granted three phases of land to develop and sell in 1989, the first phase was developed while phase two was taken away from Monte Vista in 2006 by former commissioner of VROMI Roy Marlin because the land was not developed by the developer.
In 2012 former Minister of VROMI Theodore Heyliger issued a Besluit giving Monte Vista permission to sell the 39 vacant plots of land which is phase three of what was to be developed. The sale price which can be viewed on Island Real Estate website. "Sale price $362,520 Monte Vista Lot 44 Prime lots for sale in Monte Vista. 24 hours security, gated community, unobstructive ocean views, spacious lots, privacy, infrastructure ready, $180 to $300 per square meter in an exclusive family neighborhood."
Based on that SMN News asked Prime Minister Wescot Williams to outline the policy in place regulating the distribution of government long lease land. Wescot Williams said that there is no policy regulating government long lease land since 2010 when St. Maarten became a country. Wescot Williams said that the granting of long lease land lies solely in the hand of the Minister of VROMI. She said as it is right now the Council of Ministers does not even see the listing of long lease land that were given out neither do they see the decisions taken by individual Ministers.
When St. Maarten was part of the Netherlands Antilles, holders of government long lease land could only sell the property if there is a structure on it.
