Gendarmerie Wraps Up Armed Robbery Investigation --- Several gang members arrested.

Marigot:--- The Gendarmerie disclosed on Monday in a press release that they have made what is believed to be the last arrests of the gang responsible for a series of armed robberies during the summer.

The first arrests of three suspects suspected to be the culprits that committed the robberies in Sandy Ground and Marigot took place on September 5, 2012 during a judicial operation where several houses were searched. Two out of the three suspects were charged on September 7, 2012.

As the investigation continued it brought to light more suspects, and the first of the remaining members of the gang was arrested on October 9, 2012 in Capesterre Belle Eau, Guadeloupe.

This suspect was a minor aged 17 originating from Sandy Ground who had been placed in the care of a family following a series of crimes he committed in St. Martin. He was arrested with the cooperation of Gendarmes from Pointe-a-Pitre and placed under judiciary control. He will be charged with four armed robberies committed in St. Martin between July 27 and August 23, 2012.

The second arrest of a minor aged 16 took place on October 20. He was suspected of having incited the others into committing the robberies and was indicted for his participation in eight armed robberies committed between July 19 and August 23 on businesses in Sandy Ground, Marigot, Concordia, Agrément, and Baie Nettle.

He is also suspected of jewellery snatching thefts in Marigot and was transferred to Guadeloupe on October 21 where he was placed in provisional detention.

A total of ten armed robberies have now been solved which took place during the summer period thanks to diligent investigation. Three out of four suspects indicted, two adults and a minor, were placed in detention. The fourth, a minor, is under judiciary control but still faces a jail sentence.

Since the beginning of the year 32 armed robberies with firearms have been solved thanks to the investigation by the special armed robbery unit VAMA attached to the detectives department. Some 21 individuals have been charged for armed robberies, the majority of them transferred to and incarcerated in Guadeloupe.
