GREAT BAY (DCOMM):--- Professor Trevor Hassell, Adjunct Professor of Medicine, University of the West Indies, Barbados, will be giving a lecture to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) about Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) on Saturday evening.
NCDs comprise of heart disease, stroke, cancer, respiratory illness, and diabetes. These NCDs results in 36 million deaths per year worldwide.
The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has called for a comprehensive approach to fight NCDs which includes governments, civil society, academia, international organizations, and private sector.
NGO executive board members, civic groups, and interested members of their organizations are invited to share and receive information with respect to NCDs on Saturday, 27 October from 6:00pm to 8:00pm in the Dr. A. C. Wathey Legislative Hall at the Government Administration Building
Professor Trevor Hassell, Adjunct Professor of Medicine, University of the West Indies, Barbados, is also one of the speakers at the two-day Cancer Conference being jointly organized by Collective Prevention Services (CPS) from the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, and a number of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), that starts on Friday.
Professor Hassell is also Honorary Consultant Physician and Cardiologist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados, and Chairman of the National Commission for Chronic Non Communicable Diseases.
Professor Hassell was recently appointed as Barbados Special Envoy for Chronic Diseases, and has received many awards including appointment to the Order of Barbados in the Grade of the Gold Crown of Merit in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the medical profession.
During the Cancer Conference, Professor Trevor Hassell will be addressing Best Practice National Program of Monitoring and Managing Cancer Registry and Guidelines for Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment.
'Get Checked,' is the Minister of Public Health's campaign to improve public health amongst the population of the country, and the NCD lecture and Cancer Conference are avenues to bring forth awareness within the community.
