Cancer Conference Speakers Ready for two-days of sharing information to stakeholders and public.

jasminecijntje25102012GREAT BAY (DCOMM):--- Registered Nurse Jasmien Cijntje, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) board members Graciella Zimmerman, Lydia Vanterpool, and Dr. Henk Wassenaar, will be some of the speakers at the Cancer Conference that starts on Friday morning.

The Cancer Conference is being jointly organized by Collective Prevention Services (CPS), a department within the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, in collaboration with a number of NGOs.

Registered Nurse Jasmien Cijntje, one of the speakers, is currently Supervisor Outpatient Services at the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), and assisting and working with Chemotherapy patients since 1997. In March 1982 Cijntje became a Registered Nurse and in January 2000 graduated with a Masters in Science in Nursing Management.

Nurse Cijntje will be addressing Chemotherapy in SMMC Statistics; and will also be part of a panel discussion on Saturday.

Gracillia Zimmerman, is a Project Assistant at the Department of Youth Affairs. She is also a member and advocate of the Sint Maarten Cancer Foundation.

graciellazimmerman25102012Zimmerman and her colleague Lydia Vanterpool, also from the Cancer Foundation, will highlight during the conference the role, expectation and services of Non-Governmental Organizations.

Vanterpool is self-employed and Managing Director of Lydia's Flower Shop. Her previous work experience includes Store Manager at the Orchid Flower Shop and a Teacher at the Jack and Jill Play School.

Another speaker at the conference is Dr. Henk Wassenaar originally from Delft, the Netherlands. Since the end of 2005, Dr. Wassenaar has been an Internist Oncologist at the Horacio Oduber Hospital in Aruba.

Dr. Wassenaar will be making a presentation on the treatment process, procedures and background for prostate and colorectal cancer.

The conference is being held under the theme: "Cancer and aging, collectively improving our local cancer care and responsibility," is being held from October 26 to the 27 at the Sonesta Great Bay Beach Hotel & Casino.

The four areas to be highlighted at the conference are breast cancer, cervical, colon and prostate cancer.

'Get Checked,' is the Minister of Public Health's campaign to improve public health amongst the population of the country, and the conference is one of the avenues to bring forth awareness within the community.

The general public is invited to conference activities on Saturday, October 27 from 9:00am to 1:15pm and from 1:30pm to 4:00pm (lunch not included).
