Family Reports Police Brutality at Mental Health Foundation.

Dear Editor,

I am writing to you to bring your attention to an appalling situation occuring between the St.Maarten Police Department and the St.Maarten Mental Health Foundation (MHF).

A cousin of mine (J.R. Thomas) is presently hospitalized at the Mental Health Foundation. On Sunday December 27th, he became aggressive to personnel of the MHF. They solicited the assistance of the police department to get the situation under control. A police officer actually punched my cousin in the face, giving him a burst lip.

My family and I contacted the MHF to inquire how something like this could happen. We were offered apologies and reassured that it would not happen again. However, it has happened again, this time in the presence of his own father!

On Saturday January 9th, the police was asked to be present while my cousin was taken out of the isolation room to take a shower. There were four or five police officers present. My cousin lashed out at one of them, and he was pinned to the ground by the officers. However, after already being held on the ground, one of the police officers proceeded to punch my cousin in the head!

My family and I are shocked and appalled by this police brutality. My cousin is not a criminal on the street, but a patient that is unstable due to mental health problems.

We would like the media on St.Maarten to shed light on this police brutality in an effort to stop this from happening again to ANY patient and to bring about a change in how patients are treated.

Thank you in advance for your assistance on this matter.

Kind regards,

Lilian Gonzalez
